Thanks to the support of Regione Lombardia and the Lombardy Chamber System under the “Digital Voucher I4.0 – Lombardy 2022” call, TUTTOTONDO S.r.l. has developed the VERIGATE project.

The project is part of the company’s technological innovation path, with the aim of introducing advanced digital solutions in highly complex operational environments such as construction sites. VERIGATE was conceived to address concrete challenges related to workplace safety, evolving traditional access control systems through the integration of Industry 4.0 technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence, and Blockchain.

VERIGATE

Beneficiary: TUTTOTONDO S.r.l.

Call: Digital Voucher I4.0 – Lombardy 2022

General objective: To promote the adoption by Lombardy SMEs of services and solutions based on advanced digital skills and technologies, in line with the strategy defined in the National Transition 4.0 Plan

Short description: Development of an intelligent system for access control and safety management on construction sites, based on IoT-enabled sensors, AI-driven data analysis, and blockchain-based data certification, aimed at reducing operational risks, improving monitoring, and ensuring full traceability of activities.

Objectives

The VERIGATE project was developed in response to an increasingly complex operational context in construction site safety management, where traditional human-based control models are becoming less effective due to high staff turnover, reduced operational continuity, and a growing risk of human error.

In this context, the project aims to introduce a digital system capable of making access, monitoring, and control processes more reliable, automated, and integrated, significantly reducing the risk associated with unauthorized personnel and improving the overall management of site activities.

VERIGATE therefore seeks to transform access control from a manual and static activity into an intelligent and dynamic process, capable of collecting and analyzing data and providing valuable insights both in real time and for administrative, managerial, and, where necessary, legal purposes.

Proposed solution

The solution developed within the VERIGATE project consists of an integrated technological platform for the intelligent management of access control and safety on construction sites, designed to operate in complex and highly variable environments.

The system is based on a smart access control unit equipped with advanced sensors for facial recognition and biometric parameter detection, enabling the automatic identification of authorized personnel. This is complemented by an advanced video surveillance system with Pan-Tilt cameras, supported by artificial intelligence algorithms, which allows monitoring of both vehicle and operator movements within the construction site.

All collected data are managed through a centralized relational database, integrated with the administrative and management systems of the site, enabling continuous creation and updating of worker profiles and recorded activities. Data exchange and storage are further enhanced through a blockchain-based certification system, ensuring immutability and traceability of information, making it suitable for verification and legal use.

A distinctive feature of the solution lies in the use of proprietary technologies and materials developed within the ecosystem of Techinnova S.p.A., which supported the project in research and development, system integration, and technological validation activities. These include hardware components manufactured through 3D printing using innovative patented materials, capable of incorporating secondary raw materials and contributing to improved sustainability and device durability.

The entire system has been designed according to a modular and scalable architecture, allowing adaptation to different types of construction sites and future integration with broader enterprise systems, such as ERP platforms and process management tools.

Expected impact

The VERIGATE project is designed to generate a tangible and measurable impact on multiple levels.

From a safety perspective, the solution significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access and improves control over on-site activities, helping to prevent accidents and hazardous situations. The automation of verification processes also increases the reliability of controls, overcoming the limitations of manual management.

At an operational level, VERIGATE enhances overall site efficiency by reducing access times, avoiding bottlenecks, and optimizing the management of human resources and workflows.

From a technological standpoint, the project represents a concrete example of integrated Industry 4.0 application, combining IoT, artificial intelligence, and blockchain with innovative hardware solutions and patented materials, within a broader framework of technology transfer and applied innovation.

Finally, from an economic and industrial perspective, the VERIGATE platform is conceived as a scalable and replicable product, with potential applications across multiple sectors beyond construction, contributing to the digitalization of processes and the adoption of advanced safety management models.
