Thanks to funding provided by the Chamber of Commerce of Milan Monza Brianza Lodi under the “Call for Solutions 2023 – Solutions to Improve Bicycle Mobility” initiative, the working group led by project coordinator TUTTOTONDO S.r.l. has launched the development phases of the PRINCIPE project – Resilient Integrated Platform for Cyclists and Pedestrians. The initiative is implemented in partnership with E-Dway S.r.l. and with the technical and operational contribution of specialized suppliers and collaborating organizations engaged in applied research, field testing, and awareness-raising activities.
The project responds to the growing need for safety and traceability in soft mobility by integrating next-generation technological solutions designed to support cyclists and improve interaction with pedestrians, vehicles, and urban infrastructure.

Call: Call for Solutions 2023 – Solutions to Improve Bicycle Mobility
Objective: To identify and promote innovative solutions addressing key safety challenges in the cycling sector.
Project description: Development of an integrated system for cycling and pedestrian mobility, based on smart devices for the automatic signaling of turns, braking, and hazards, and on an IoT anti-theft system with GPS tracking.
Objectives
The PRINCIPE project aims to significantly enhance the safety and accessibility of cycling and pedestrian mobility in both urban and suburban environments. The primary goal is to reduce risks associated with cycling by providing users with advanced, user-friendly technologies that can be easily integrated into everyday transport solutions.
A key focus is the development of intelligent, automatic signaling systems that allow cyclists to effectively communicate their intentions – such as turning or braking – to others on the road, without any distractions. This helps to reduce accidents, especially in high-traffic or low-visibility areas.
The project also seeks to tackle the growing issue of bicycle and e-bike theft through advanced IoT devices capable of real-time monitoring and triggering alarm and geolocation responses in the event of suspicious activity.
Equally important is the objective to promote more sustainable and responsible mobility, offering personalized, safe routes and encouraging the adoption of positive behavioral practices among cyclists and citizens. This will be supported by public awareness campaigns and user participation in pilot testing.
Proposed Solution
PRINCIPE is based on the integration of hardware and software components that work together to offer cyclists a complete support ecosystem for safer and more informed travel, both in urban and off-road settings. The solutions are designed to be intuitive, automated, and fully compatible with existing digital platforms such as TRATOO and E-DWAY.
On the hardware side, the project includes:
- An automatic signaling system consisting of intelligent LED lights mounted on the handlebar and seatpost, capable of activating autonomously by detecting the tilt and movement of the bicycle when turning or braking.
- A 4G LTE IoT smart lock, equipped with high-precision GPS, a 110 dB integrated siren, and app-based push notifications, designed to monitor the bike’s location 24/7 and respond automatically in the event of attempted theft.
On the software side, PRINCIPE features:
- An intelligent navigation and safety module that alerts users to hazardous situations in real time – such as riding the wrong way on one-way streets or entering restricted zones – and suggests safe, personalized alternative routes, including for tourism purposes.
- Full integration with mobile apps and smartwatches, ensuring a constant and accessible flow of information even while riding.
Partners and Collaborations
The project is carried out through an official partnership between TUTTOTONDO S.r.l., acting as project leader and coordinator, and E-Dway S.r.l., an innovative startup operating in the field of electric vehicle rental and soft mobility. The two companies share technical expertise, infrastructure, and a common vision.
The project also benefits from the involvement of several technical suppliers and collaborating organizations with targeted roles:
- Techinnova S.p.A., a certified incubator, provides laboratories for prototyping and support for research and development.
- SNJ Media Studio S.r.l. is responsible for software development and system integration.
- MTM S.r.l. coordinates field testing activities, drawing on its extensive experience in applied experimentation.
- The Dabartet and AMO – Amici del Monte Orsa associations support public engagement and testing activities, respectively in urban and off-road contexts.

Activities and Development Phases
The PRINCIPE project follows a structured development process composed of distinct but interconnected phases, designed to ensure effective, scalable, and scientifically validated implementation.
TUTTOTONDO is responsible for the design and development of the automatic signaling system and the software module for route and hazard management. In parallel, E-DWAY develops the smart anti-theft system, based on an already tested prototype, and manages its integration with their fleet management platform.
The activities are mainly carried out in the laboratories of Milan and also include field testing with the help of volunteers and local associations. During the tests, qualitative and quantitative data will be collected to evaluate the effectiveness of the systems, which will then be analyzed to optimize the technologies developed.
Expected Impact
PRINCIPE project aims to deliver tangible results across multiple dimensions:
- Urban impact: Enhancing communication between cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles through an automated, intuitive signaling system.
- Social impact: Promoting a culture of safety and accountability through outreach initiatives and the publication of good practice guidelines for road use.
- Environmental impact: Encouraging sustainable transport modes and contributing to the reduction of vehicle emissions.
- Economic impact: Addressing the issue of bicycle theft, one of the main barriers to broader adoption of cycling mobility.
Future Outlook
The solutions developed under PRINCIPE are designed to be modular, scalable, and easily adaptable to other micromobility vehicles such as electric scooters. With the use of miniaturized sensors and compatibility with Smart City technologies, future expansions may include features such as road condition detection, pothole monitoring, and obstacle alerts.
The project looks beyond present-day mobility needs and aims to contribute to building a smarter, safer, and more inclusive transportation ecosystem – where technology is truly at the service of the citizen.
